Book number 2 in the “Prince Edward Island Shores” series is one of the novels I was most anticipating this summer, because a visit to the Island (even a fictitious visit) is always a welcome retreat! “The Last Way Home” is Liz Johnson’s sequel to “Beyond the Tides”, and tells the story of two characters we were just briefly introduced to – but who now share a whole plethora of history, secrets, and surprises with us.
Although I didn’t enjoy this second story quite as much as the first, it is still a pleasant and interesting novel in its own right. It has heart, and the characters come to life with admirable vividness – from the teammates on the junior hockey team to the unsavoury members of Eli’s past, each one becomes either a clear friend or foe in our mind’s eye. The romance is also sweet; perhaps a little cliche – but in a way that brings a smile to your heart.
Overall “The Last Way Home” is much like a Hallmark movie – it has just the right amounts of sweetness, interesting backstory, and happy-ending drama to make it a sigh-worthy read. The best part, in my opinion, is the setting; because you can’t beat a summer spent on PEI, even if you need to get there through the pages of a well-written story!

Second books in a series are always hit or miss. Glad you enjoyed this one overall.
