A Series (And Story) Like No Other – guest review by Hayley

The first time-travel novel I ever read was book number one of the “Timeless” series, “When the Day Comes.  It was a mind-bending adventure with unforeseen twists and turns.  “In This Moment” fits that same description as well, although I’m a little more used to the time-travel element the second time around!

The three time periods chosen for this book are very unique from each other in some ways, while being similar in others.  Advancements in modern technology and knowledge are probably the biggest differences between the three time periods, especially because each incorporates medical research and development.  But the three time periods are also similar because each centres around a particularly devastating time or event in American history.

The thing that amazed me most about this novel is that it is incredibly well-done.  It feels strangely real for a novel based on the fantastical idea of time travel!  I think it’s because the characters are so well-developed and three-dimensional, despite the science-fiction nature of the storyline.  I must say I am amazed by Gabrielle Meyer’s talent to craft not only an amazing story, but very realistic characters to fill the roles therein.

There are several deep themes in this novel, such as choices, and identity.  Some of the ideas and conclusions drawn are ones that I agree with, and others not as much.  For example, I appreciated how our heroine tried to follow God with her choices, but I wish more emphasis would have been placed on having an actual day-to-day relationship with Him, and not only with other people.

In any case, I enjoyed this novel immensely.  And with the rather shocking epilogue hinting at what the next book could hold, I’m looking forward to whatever is next for the “Timeless” series!
