Each and every title in the Moody Bible Studies for Women has been a special blessing for me in one way or another, and the newest addition to the series is no exception. “Promises Kept: 5 Old Testament Covenants and How Christ Fulfilled Them” by Courtney Reissig takes us deep into the Old Testament as we unpack what the far-reaching word ‘covenant’ really means, and how it applies to the promises God made to His children.
While “Promises Kept” follows the same basic outline as all the Moody Bible Studies (5 days of study per week for 6 weeks), it is also a little different in the study approach. First, we read the same text from Scripture every day during the week’s lesson, and work on memorizing a portion of it as well. We also answer questions about our daily reading, but Courtney really challenges us to think and ponder for ourselves – she does not provide much commentary at all, we are on our own to figure out what our takeaway about each covenant really is. Sometimes this felt a bit overwhelming, but then I realized that she was not spoon feeding me the answers – it was up to me to think, research, cross-reference, and pray about the content – all for my own good, and to deepen my understanding of the Word. It wasn’t easy, but it was powerful!
So my concluding remarks about “Promises Kept” would be, basically, that it is a challenge but so worth it. This deep dive into the Old Testament, to witness how it relates to the New Testament and to us, is life-changing, really. So if you are up for a journey that will take time, effort, and prayer, but lead you to a place of better understanding God’s Word and His ways, this is definitely the next Bible study you should pick up.
