I can never pass up the opportunity to read new Christian Historical Fiction by an author I’ve enjoyed before…. Stephenia H. McGee impressed me last year with her story of “The Secrets of Emberwild”, so I was excited to discover what fictitious delights “The Swindler’s Daughter” would hold!
Published by Revell in the spring of 2023, this story is unique, unexpected, and features such compelling characters that I couldn’t help but be hooked right away. Lillian’s whole life is turned upside down in an instant, when everything she believes true about her past is revealed to be, well, a scam. You can’t help but hurt for her, right? After all, when our identity is taken away, it is a feeling not quite like any other. So although I couldn’t ‘like’ Lillian for awhile I could sympathize with her, and the actions and choices she made. Before long I did befriend this strong character, and so many other lovable ones as well. The mystery was interesting, the tensions between characters believable, and the overall plot very enjoyable to watch unfold.
I definitely recommend “The Swindler’s Daughter” to all fans of Christian Historical Fiction (which is the best of all genres, in my opinion!) and also to those who enjoy light mysteries set in times past. It is the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon, and if you are like me you will find the worst part of the story to arrive when we reach the last page, and realize that it’s finished!
