As we all know, July 1st, 2017 is the 150th birthday of our beautiful, powerful, incredible nation called Canada. Dominion Day, or Canada Day, is always a chance to celebrate our homeland, but this year is special, a true milestone. Compared to many other nations, Canada is still young—and yet Canadians live in a country that is blessed with freedom, abundance, opportunity, and beauty. As a way of celebrating Canada 150, Bible League Canada has published a beautiful keepsake book entitled “One Dominion: Celebrating Canada, Prepared for a Purpose”. Written by Bob Beasley and Paul Richardson, and designed by Graf-Martin Communications, “One Dominion” is a compilation celebrating not only Canada as a whole nation, but also the individual men and women who were courageous and wise in the Christian faith, and as a result changed the course of Canadian history forever.
“One Dominion” begins with a snapshot of what life looks like right now, in 2017, for Canadians. For example, did you know that Canadian air ranks third cleanest in the world? Or that Canada’s healthcare and education systems are considered among the best in the world, and are being emulated by other nations?
The next sections of “One Dominion” begin to discuss the history of Canada, and how the Christian faith and consequent actions of ordinary people have influenced Canada in incredible ways. These chapter titles include:
- From Village to Dominion
- Exploration Leads to Confederation
- In Stone, On Paper, In Song
- Transformed Lives Form a Nation
- The Transformation of Nations
- For the Greater Good
- From this Nation to the Nations
Within the pages of these chapters, readers discover fascinating insights such as the Scripture verses inscribed into the walls and stained-glass windows of the Peace Tower, the history of our National Anthem, and the faith-filled decisions of some of our historical leaders. But I still haven’t mentioned one integral, beautiful aspect of this book. . . On each page of the keepsake volume entitled “One Dominion”, next to each inspiring quote and insightful story, is a breathtaking photo depicting either the people, the landmarks, the scenery, or the animals of our country. These pictures are incredible! My only wish is that they were captioned, so that I could discover the location where each one was taken
In the end, reading “One Dominion” would be an incredible addition to this year’s Dominion Day/Canada Day celebrations for Canadians everywhere. I have no doubt that it will remind you, as it reminded me, that our country was truly founded in God. As Psalm 72:8 (the inspiration for our country’s title) says, “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea and from the river unto the ends of the earth”.
Many thanks to Graf-Martin Communications and Bible League Canada for my complementary review copy of this incredible book.
