Fascinating History in a Novel!

“London 1879: Forced to leave all she loves behind, she seeks a new life in a city bursting with opportunity, but fraught with danger”. Although these words only give a tiny peek into the story, they revealed enough to capture my interest in this first novel of the “London Beginnings” series. “The Captain’s Daughter” is a Historical Fiction novel written by Jennifer Delamere and published by Bethany House in 2017. While this story undoubtedly contains all the best elements of Historical Fiction including sweet romance, realistic characters and interesting setting, one other facet is unique to this book in particular…

The “cherry on top” of “The Captain’s Daughter” is the fictitious—but clearly well researched—behind-the-scenes look at an extremely famous comic opera, created by Gilbert and Sullivan. Because the “H.M.S. Pinafore” opera (and later “The Pirates of Penzance”, as well) is being performed at the heroine’s place of employment, readers receive fascinating insight into all aspects of historical operas, from the writing of the music to the final bows of the performers. Combined with the usual well-loved elements of Christian Historical Fiction, this special feature makes for a delightful read in so many ways.

If you are looking for a fresh, charming new historical novel to read on a lazy afternoon, let “The Captain’s Daughter” transport you back in time to London, to visit the world of theatre and music. If you are like me, you won’t want your visit to end!
