When I saw a collection of historical romance novellas by three of my favorite authors, I knew it needed to be added to my reading list! “All My Tomorrows” was published by Bethany House in the summer of 2018, and includes:
- Karen Witemeyer’s “Worth the Wait” (a “Ladies of Harper Station” novella)
- Jody Hedlund’s “An Awakened Heart” (a prequel to her “Orphan Train” series)
- Elizabeth Camden’s “Toward the Sunrise” (joining her novel “Until the Dawn”)
I am not normally a big fan of novellas for the simple reason that they feel too short, but this collection is special because I’ve enjoyed all of the full-length stories that these novellas are connected to. It was a delight to discover the stories behind some of the secondary characters I’d already been introduced to, and also to revisit some of my favorite protagonists (who, of course, become secondary characters in these novellas!).
Each story was special in its own way, but my favorite of the three was definitely “Toward the Sunrise” because it combined winsome humor with characters I adored and could relate to. Karen Witemeyer’s “Worth the Wait” contained a little bit of material that I would rate PG-13 (if it were a movie), but I rather expected this after learning bits and pieces of Victoria’s tragic past in “No Other Will Do”. And finally, Jody Hedlund’s story is unique because it is told from the point of view of several characters, including the heroine from “With You Always” – this provides invaluable background details that shed light on the full-length novels in unexpected ways.
In the end, I highly recommend this novella collection to anyone who is a fan of Christian Historical Romance and/or novellas. And if you have read the full-length novels these short stories are connected to? Well then, “All My Tomorrows” is an absolute must-read that will shed fascinating insights into already beloved stories!
