You Will Be Changed

long-way-gone-imageLyrical. Honest. Inquiring. Beautiful. I could continue, but these four words give you at least a partial picture of the depth and power held in the pages of a new book by Charles Martin, entitled “Long Way Gone”. Published by Thomas Nelson in 2016, this is the first novel by Charles Martin that I have ever read. It won’t be my last! Rarely do Christian novels probe as deeply into the human heart and touch readers in as many profound ways as “Long Way Gone” does. Quite simply, once you read it you won’t forget it. It may even change you as a person.

“Long Way Gone” is a modern-day (or perhaps slightly in the past) retelling of the prodigal son. With incredible understanding of the human nature, Mr. Martin brings each individual member of his story to life, filling them with depth and unique perspectives, but always allowing them to to resonate with readers in some way. In addition to this cast of people (I cannot call them characters, for they are so much more) the story is a fascinating tribute to music that will prove captivating and insightful to musicians and “music appreciators” alike (myself being in the latter category). These elements, combined with realistic setting, unique past-and-present techniques, and something almost magical that I can’t quite put my finger on, create a truly unforgettable story.

If you enjoy long, deep, thought-provoking stories that challenge you and fill your imagination with truths that point directly to the Creator of the Universe, don’t hesitate to read “Long Way Gone”. You will laugh. You will cry. You will think. You will be changed.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
