A Fascinating, Compelling Guide to Understanding Personality

Fantastic! Intriguing! Life-changing! The best non-fiction book I’ve read this year! That is basically my short description of a book by Anne Bogel called “Reading People: How Seeing the World Through the Lens of Personality Changes Everything”. Published by BakerBooks in the autumn of 2017, the sub-title of this book really says it all. Why? Because everything truly does change when you view life through the lens of personality! As the back cover asks, “Want to revolutionize the way you live, love, work, and pray? Understanding personality is the first step!” If you’ve ever wanted a better understanding of the personality frameworks that are popular today, this book should definitely go to the top of your must-read pile.

With a warm, compelling writing style and engaging personal stories, Anne Bogel helps us journey towards an insightful understanding of several different personality frameworks, including: Introverts and Extroverts, The Five Love Languages, Keirsey’s Temperaments, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Enneagram, and more. Not only does Ms. Bogel explain how to use these frameworks, but she also gives tips for “getting it right”, guides us step-by-step through the more in-depth models, and shares valuable insights for incorporating the wisdom we gain (about ourselves and the people we interact with) into our daily lives and relationships.

Honestly, I cannot recommend this book enough. Basically I think everyone could benefit in some way from reading even part of it. One of the best features is that it is extremely reader-friendly, and after the prologue and first chapter, the author invites you to skip around and read the chapters about the frameworks that look most interesting to you. Another great feature is the extremely valuable list of resources for the best books, websites, etc. for actually doing the quizzes and assessments she discusses (and if you are wondering, I completed the majority of the framework assessments in the book and did not have to pay anything to do so! This is not to say you shouldn’t pay to have a professional assessment done, simply that you don’t HAVE to in order to benefit immensely :).

In any case, if you are the slightest bit curious about personality frameworks, do not hesitate to pick up this book. If you are like me, it will make you think in ways you probably never have. It will also give you life-changing insights about yourself, and will simultaneously change the way you relate to the people you love, as well. So what are you waiting for? Find a copy of “Reading People” and discover “what makes you uniquely you, what makes the people in your life uniquely them, and why it all matters”!
