“Praying God’s Promises: The Life-Changing Power of Praying the Scriptures” by Linda Evans Shepherd is the type of resource that you can return to again and again, obtaining different insight and wisdom from it during varying seasons of life. Published by Revell in the summer of 2018, this little volume is overflowing with Scripture-based prayer-starters, practical applications, inspiring bits of wisdom, and ideas for personal reflection to help readers learn how to pray through the promises that God has given us in His Word.
“Praying God’s Promises” is organized by topic, ranging from Direction, Faith, and Healing, to Relationships, Strength, and Worship. Each chapter opens with an introductory story or devotional-type reading, then moves into what the author calls The Promise Garden. This section is organized into a format that begins with; Your Word Says (and then a Bible verse), followed by: I Agree (and then a short, prayerful statement that corresponds to the verse and helps us to claim that promise in our lives). The chapter closes with a prayer thanking God for His promises about the specific topic.
As you can see, this resource is definitely one that could be referenced time and time again, throughout the course of daily life. A couple issues that prevent me from giving it a full five stars, however, are the fact that I don’t personally like all of the translations of the Bible referenced in the book, and sometimes an occasional verse seems to have been taken out of context from it’s purpose and meaning in the Bible. Of course, as with most all books written on the topic of Prayer, readers must take what they can from the book – what God is whispering to their hearts and in their lives – and discard the rest.
If you are looking for a resource that will help you incorporate the practice of praying the Scriptures into your quiet times, this is definitely a title you should consider. While I did not agree with all of it, it undoubtedly contained many nuggets of wisdom that inspired and guided me to begin “Praying God’s Promises”.
