Full Steam Ahead review

Full Steam Ahead pictureAre you looking for an adventure that is noteworthy and unique, filled with peculiar plot lines and out-of-the-ordinary characters? Or perhaps you most enjoy humorous interactions between hero and heroine, mixed in with story suspense and perhaps a little mystery. In either case, I know just the book for you…

Although it’s highly combustible, a little on the ‘unlikely’ side of believable, and may cause you to be late if you start reading before an appointment, Full Steam Ahead is a story certain to capture your imagination and hold it tight – from beginning to end. With this novel as her 6th full-length book, Karen Witemeyer adds to her repertoire of comedic, western adventures filled with unconventional characters who seem to emerge from the pages into real life.

Nicole Renard, the only child of a wealthy shipping magnate, and Darius Thornton, self-proclaimed scientist of steamship boilers, find themselves thrust into each other’s paths after a trail of events involving a jeweled pirate dagger and a jealous shipping competitor. As they work together to realize a dream of inventing a safer boiler system for river travel, Nicole and Darius face increasing dangers from outside threats – and impossible decisions for an uncertain future as they begin to care for each other.

Full Steam Ahead is an enjoyable, lighthearted novel filled with comedic escapades and thoughtful insight into the importance of letting go of your past, while trusting God with the future. On the downside of the story, the same issue occurs as with many of Ms. Witemeyer’s works – occasional scenes between Nicole and Darius border on inappropriate for conservative readers, and several descriptions are mildly uncomfortable to think about. Overall, however, Full Steam Ahead is a story with good intentions, and a fun adventure to enjoy during an afternoon of relaxation. From pirate daggers to boiler explosions, you won’t be able to stop once you get moving… full steam ahead!

Where Courage Calls review

Where Courage CallsJanette Oke, famous Canadian author and the ‘pioneer of inspirational fiction’ has returned from retirement with a brand new Historical Fiction novel, co-written with her daughter Laurel Oke Logan.  Fans of Janette’s dozens of award-winning stories of simplicity, love, and faith will be delighted with her newest release, Where Courage Calls, published by Bethany House in January of 2014.  Although this novel is clearly written in Janette’s heartfelt and simplistic style, the background leading up to the writing and subsequent publication of the book is almost as interesting as the story itself…

The Hallmark Channel production company recently released a movie based on Ms. Oke’s Canadian West book series, entitled When Calls the Heart.  A television series by the same name soon followed the movie, and is currently airing in the United States.  (Ironically, this Canadian-based series has not made it to Canadian television just yet!)  As stated by Ms. Oke, the producers of the movie and television series contacted her to inquire about her interest in writing a new novel as a companion story to their films.  She agreed – on the condition that the book could be co-authored with her daughter Laurel, also a published writer.  The result of this unusual circumstance is Where Courage Calls – a touching story of a cultured, well-to-do young woman, Beth Thatcher, who leaves her luxurious Toronto home to accept a teaching position in a coal-mining town in western Canada.

Although I can’t say whether or not the story correlates closely with the companion television series – because I have not yet viewed any episodes – the book brings to life an endearing tale all on its own.  With lovable characters, emotional issues, and a realistic setting, Where Courage Calls is built around the theme of Philippians 4:13, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’  Beth Thatcher relies on the truth of this verse to help her through the most difficult, and adventurous, stage of her life.  Following in the footsteps of her cousin, also named Elizabeth (from the Canadian West book series), Beth strives to bring the gift of knowledge to the tragedy-stricken town of Coal Valley.   As time goes on, however, she finds that the community has taught her just as much as she taught the children in her school.  As the end of the term draws near, Beth questions her desire to return back east, even as she realizes that Coal Valley has become her true home.

All things considered, Where Courage Calls is a sweet story that is sure to be enjoyed by many people, for many different reasons.  Where Courage Calls is sure to speak to your heart if you:

– Are a fan of Janette Oke

– Enjoy Historical Fiction, especially pioneer-era

– Have watched the When Calls the Heart movie or television series

– Love the Canadian West book series

– Are looking for a wholesome, simple story of faith

– Live in western Canada and enjoy stories from your region

Obviously the list could go on, but hopefully I have made it clear that Janette Oke’s newest release is a wonderful story you will not want to miss.  And, although it is not confirmed yet, we may be able to look forward to a sequel sometime in the future!  For now though, we can be content savoring the story held in the pages of Where Courage Calls, a delightful product of an amazing author’s return from retirement.

The Pleasure of His Company review

The Pleasure of His CompanyAre you ready to take a journey towards exponential joy, deeply ingrained peace, and a relationship more rewarding than anything you could ever imagine?  Do you long for a friendship with someone who listens, comforts, and loves you unconditionally for who you are, and who you were meant to be?  Although many people don’t realize it, a true relationship with our Heavenly Father can become the most vital part of life if we just take the time and effort to nourish it, by communing with Him.  A brand new book published by Bethany House, entitled The Pleasure of His Company, shares powerful insights about stepping into the Lord’s peaceful presence simply to enjoy fellowship with him.  Author Dutch Sheets shares personal stories and biblical insights in this powerful but easy-to-read book, which is sure to be enjoyed for many reasons…

– Because this book is divided into 30 short chapters, it is perfect for use as a daily devotional.  Each chapter introduces readers to a new concept, practice, or insight, and ends with a heartfelt prayer footnoted with scriptural references.

– Dutch Sheets is a talented writer, infusing his work with emotion and personal stories.  You will undoubtedly laugh, possibly cry, and maybe even laugh until you cry!

– Taking an in-depth look at scripture, Mr. Sheets reveals the root and origin of various words found in sometimes-confusing passages of scripture.  Many times this basic study brings to light a greater understanding of God’s Word.

– The content of this delightful book is fresh, unique, and definitely not typical of many Christian books and ideas popular today.  A personal relationship with God is a foreign concept to many people, yet this is the basis of The Pleasure of His Company.

Although the excellent qualities far outweigh the negative aspects, I personally felt slightly put off by a few of the analogies presented in a couple of the chapters.  Overall, however, this book was a delightful, powerful reading journey to take, and most importantly it nourished my relationship with the Lord along the way.  I hope – and pray – that this book will bless you in many ways, inspire you to build a personal relationship with our Creator, and simply enjoy The Pleasure of His Company!

Song of My Heart review

SongOfMyHeart-TP_cover2.inddFans of Kim Vogel Sawyer will be delighted with her newest release from Bethany House Publishers,* entitled Song of My Heart. As with many of her previous works, this newest novel falls into the Historical Fiction genre, but could fit into both Inspirational and Romance categories as well.  Set in a small Kansas town in the late 19th century, Song of My Heart is a sweetly flowing, melodic story of love and forgiveness, but not without a share of drama and adventure, and even a touch of mystery, all of which came with prohibition laws and their consequent bootlegging operations.

A generally expected trademark of Kim Vogel Sawyer’s books is that her always colorful cast of characters will become as dear to you as beloved friends, and will captivate you from the first pages with their sweetness, and sense of physical – not merely imaginary – existence.  Sadie Wagner the heroine, and Thad McKane the hero, both fulfill these expectations excellently. Likewise, Sadie’s desperation to provide for her family, and Thad’s desire to clean the blemish from his family’s name, will become as important to readers as to each character.

Originally a resident of Indiana, Sadie responds to her cousin’s invitation to join him in Goldtree, Kansas, where the ‘perfect’ job awaits her, giving her the means to provide for her beloved family while putting her beautiful singing voice to use.  Soon after arriving, however, Sadie realizes that things are not what they appear to be, and that her new employer is hiding dark secrets and creating unlawful plans, both which involve her.  Sadie is forced to make decisions that will affect not only herself but the entire community, especially the man she is growing to love – Sheriff Thad McKane.

The main theme of the story is of releasing past regrets – of forgiving yourself, and others, for something that is in the past and must be left behind.  Thad realizes that he is only accountable for himself, not for the sins of his father before him – basically, he doesn’t need to become a preacher to make up for his father’s terrible mistakes.  Also shown in the story is the importance of trusting in God first and foremost, without leaning only on our own understanding.  Sadie finally sees that she need not struggle in caring for her family alone, but that God will care for and protect them all – her most important job is simply to trust Him.

Song of My Heart delivers all that readers have come to expect from each one of Kim Vogel Sawyer’s stories – simplicity, sweetness, love, and realistic characters.  Her books very rarely contain uncomfortable or questionable content, and are simply a joy to read.  This novel in particular contained plenty of drama, history, and humor (largely in the form of two very quirky secondary characters!).  Everything was tied up perfectly at the end, making the reader reluctant for the story to be over, but content that everything is as it should be. Finally, the writing style in Song of My Heart was very warm and relaxing, making the story truly feel as melodious and lovely as one of Sadie’s own heartfelt songs.

A Home for My Heart review

A Home for My Heart cover imageFrom the beautiful artwork of the front cover to the heart-melting words on the final pages, Anne Mateer’s newest novel, A Home for My Heart, is a warm, inspiring story reminiscent of beloved authors such as Janette Oke and Kim Vogel Sawyer.  Filled with unique twists and endearing characters, the story takes place in the interesting setting of a small orphanage and foster home.  Through the first-person narrative of assistant matron to the home, Sadie Sillsby, we observe as she encounters a life-changing decision, one that alters everything she thought was important, and every person she’s held dear.  As Sadie faces losing Blaine, the man she’s loved since childhood, the financial future of her beloved orphanage and its inhabitants hangs in the balance.  As questions and debates arise for Sadie, we as readers will find ourselves asking how we can trust in God’s plan, even when it seems we are being forced to choose between two good things.

Do you love perfect endings?  Then you will be sure to savour this one!  The beginning, however, gets off to a slightly slow start, perhaps due to the limiting perspective of first-person.  At times I would have appreciated the wider picture another one, two, or even three perspectives would be sure to add.  Sadie herself is not completely likeable, due to certain tendencies and attitudes about various issues, until at least halfway through the book.  Nevertheless, by the two-thirds mark her heart is changed and we find in her a friend worthy of sharing her story.  Sadie realizes that her work at the orphanage is only meaningful if her true worth is based in God, not in herself or the work itself.  As her thoughts reveal, “If I believed God truly loved me, I could share that love with others, and it would make a difference.  An eternal difference.  Because of the work the Lord had done in me, not because of the work I’d done for Him.”

Two significant aspects of this endearing tale stand out, making it memorable and touching.  First, the children of the story add several dimensions including humour, heart-wrenching backgrounds, and touching happy-endings when several are placed in families who love them.  Second, the love of Sadie’s life, Blaine, possesses a love for her that is truly reflective of the 1st Corinthians definition.  As Sadie depicts, “He’d never quit caring for me.  Never quit taking care of me, while I’d been selfish and fickle, sought out station and accolades to make me forget that little girl they brought out of her mother’s prison cell.  Could he truly forgive that?”  Blaine’s response shows his character, “I’d do anything to make you happy…  I love you, Sadie.  I’ve loved you since the moment Carter and I walked into that warm kitchen.  Ten years old with ancient eyes, you understood suffering the way I did.

If you want to enjoy a heartwarming story of love, sacrifice, and second chances, you will not want to miss A Home for My Heart.  It is sure to bring a smile to your face, and if you are like me, a few tears to your eyes as well.  Although it may take a little while to become immersed in the story, the end results are worth it, guaranteed.

Revealing Jesus: A 365-Day Devotional review

Revealing Jesus cover imageA fresh, unique new devotional has been released, entitled Revealing Jesus – A 365-Day Devotional by Darlene Zschech.  Ms. Zschech is an Australian-resident singer, songwriter, worship leader, author, speaker, and co-pastor with her husband, and is best known for her song entitled ‘Shout to the Lord.’  Published by Bethany House in the spring of 2013, her newest book is an inspiring collection of readings arranged into a beautiful volume which is not only very visually appealing in it’s color coordination and easy-to-read size and format, but is more importantly filled to the seams with praise and love for our Heavenly Father.

Although designed to be accompanied by it’s corresponding song album of the same title, Revealing Jesus is very easily read as a stand-alone book.  Each day’s selection begins with a Scripture verse and insightful illustration for daily life, and is finished with a brief yet heartfelt prayer.  While simple in the delivery, the personal devotionals are sure to be compelling to many diverse circumstances, and thought-provoking enough to inspire more intense searching of Scripture, as well as the depths of the heart.  In truth, each daily selection gives readers the benefit of a concise and hard-hitting Bible study.  Unlike many other 365 day devotionals that merely skim the surface of difficult life issues and hardships, Revealing Jesus nudges readers into a deeper and more heartfelt level of Christian living, and promises to become a beloved, classic volume in the homes of many who are striving to reveal Jesus in their own lives.

A Lasting Impression review

A Lasting ImpressionBestselling author Tamera Alexander’s newest novel, A Lasting Impression, was released by Bethany House* in the fall of 2011, and is sure to make a ‘lasting impression’ on your heart and imagination. Both humorous and tender, this novel will make you laugh and cry within the span of a few pages!  From a historical accuracy standpoint, this incredible story has clearly been researched down to every last detail.  In an online interview with Ms. Alexander, she states that the director of the Belmont Mansion today actually read her manuscript before it was published, simply to ensure that all aspects of the mansion were portrayed accurately!

An intriguing aspect of this sweeping story is its remarkable cast of characters, each vividly portrayed and soon ingrained in your imagination.  Claire Laurent is a young woman with a regrettable past who is given the chance to alter her future for the better.  Sutton Monroe is a beginning attorney whose past is also filled with regrets, but of a different kind.  Through an unexpected series of events, Claire and Sutton’s lives intersect at Belmont, a mansion and estate owned by one of the richest women in America at the time, Mrs. Adelica Acklen – an actual person in history, and a vital member of the supporting cast in this story.

Several years before our story begins, Claire was pressured into furthering her family’s business by using her abilities at painting… to forge the works of famous artists.  Now a young adult, Claire is forced to make decisions on her own when a sudden crises disrupts her entire world.  Soon she finds herself at Belmont Mansion, which turns out to be both the world she’s always dreamed of belonging in, and the worst place in which to keep her previous life a secret.  What will happen when Claire’s past finally catches up with her, threatening to tear down everything she’s been working so hard to build?

A Lasting Impression is a story about being authentic.  It’s about being yourself, and loving others for being themselves.  Throughout the story, Claire struggles with feelings of unworthiness, and constantly feels inadequate for all that she has been blessed with at Belmont.  By story’s end, however, Claire finds the courage to see herself, and others, for who they truly are.  This story is also about trust, and giving your ambitions to God, letting Him guide you and fuel your dreams for the future.  In one of the most touching scenes in the story, Claire hears God’s voice in her heart, asking her if she would use her talent for painting, if she were only painting for Him.    Each message is woven seamlessly into the story.

In conclusion, A Lasting Impression by Tamera Alexander is truly a masterpiece.  The writing style was a joy to read, as it was both humorous and touching.  The history in this story is extremely interesting, especially because the reader can be assured that it is as accurate as possible.  In addition, the characters in this story are lovable and realistic, and quickly become your friends, even though, or perhaps because, they have a good share of faults.  One more important element makes this story stand out from others, but is difficult to describe…  Somehow the incredible manner in which the entire story comes together really makes you feel as though Ms. Alexander was inspired by God when writing her story. Altogether, this book will leave an inspiring and lasting impression on your heart.

Though Mountains Fall review

9780764208409At last, Christian Fiction author Dale Cramer’s long-awaited conclusion to The Daughters of Caleb Bender series has been released by Bethany House*, in January of 2013.  Beginning in ‘Paradise Valley’ and building in ‘The Captive Heart’, the story of ‘Though Mountains Fall’ will give readers a sense of closure and an understanding of what happened to each beloved character after carving out a new Amish settlement in the mountains of Mexico.  Certainly, this book should not be read without first going through each of it’s two predecessors, as each one builds greatly upon the other.

The primary characters in the novel are brought to life in a unique way. By using several points of view to bring clarity and depth to the story, we catch glimpses of very different viewpoints and emotions to the same event or situation.  Caleb, leader of the new settlement, and two of his daughters, Miriam – who is engaged to a Mexican, and Rachel – who hides a dark secret from the man she plans to marry, share the telling of the story for the most part.  Each character, both primary and secondary, is brought to life vividly through this interesting blend of viewpoints.

Because three main viewpoints are involved, many different hopes and needs are woven into the story, as well.  Caleb struggles with protecting his family and friends from the dangers, both physically and spiritually, of their new land, but at the same time faces unfathomable hurt when Miriam leaves the Amish faith to marry the only man she could ever love. Torn between her family and her closest sister, Rachel harbors her own fears and regrets.  Binding them all together is the fear and uncertainty of the army supposedly present for their protection, but bringing more problems than even the bandits they wiped out.

The most significant underlying theme and message of Though Mountains Fall is simple, but profound and applicable to everyone…  Forgiveness.  Forgiveness from God and from man.  After losing everything, including his close communion with his Heavenly Father, Caleb realizes that in order to carry on with life, you must forgive the people who have hurt you in the past. Various other instances, in the lives of both primary and secondary characters, continually show the value of forgiving others, and of accepting God’s forgiveness in your own heart.

If you have been anticipating the conclusion to The Daughters of Caleb Bender series, after finishing Though Mountains Fall you will be left with a sense of having finished one large, three-part book following the journeys of the Bender family.  Although this story is based on solid values, however, it often seems very dreary, and even depressing.  Almost too many terrible things happen to be completely believable, or fully enjoyable to read.  For those who enjoyed the first two installments in this series, and wish to satisfy their curiosity as to how the characters end up, Though Mountains Fall is a not-to-be-missed conclusion.  On it’s own, however, it is not the most enjoyable, or the most memorable, historical fiction novel.

The Captive Heart review

The Captive Heart imageAt long last, the second book in The Daughters of Caleb Bender series has been released. The Captive Heart, Dale Cramer’s latest book, became available from Bethany House Publishers* at the first of 2012, and is sure to excite fans of it’s predecessor, entitled Paradise Valley.  Apparently at least one more book will follow in the series as well, as The Captive Heart contains many loose ends, waiting to be tied up in a final story.  Based on the events of a true story, The Captive Heart takes place in Mexico, where a new Amish settlement was founded by the Caleb Bender family a year previous to this story’s beginning.

A unique part of this novel is the author’s technique in allowing the reader to watch the story unfold through the eyes of not just one or even two, but several lifelike characters.  Although Miriam Bender, a strong, loyal young woman, is the dominant heroine, her sisters, father, and others also add their views, forming a well thought-out (and surprisingly not confusing) novel.  The tie that binds each central character together is their need to survive the one  blight in their beautiful new home – the bandits led by El Pantera, a brutal, harsh, man, who seemingly has no conscience.

Conflict and hardship abound in Paradise Valley, both within and without.  Miriam finds herself haunted by the love of a man forbidden to her, the only man she could ever be happy sharing her life with.  At the same, the entire settlement lives in constant fear of being robbed, killed, or worse, by the infamous El Pantera and his bandits.  After one of their people is killed, and another kidnapped, members of the fast growing, but strictly nonviolent Amish community, and one loyal, native friend, are forced into unthinkable choices to save their loved ones.

One of the main themes in The Captive Heart is the debate between the Amish way of non-violence, and the desire to protect your loved ones. This unsettled question compels readers to look at their own values. Often in the characters’ situations, they are forced to make choices that truly seem impossible.  Similarly, another theme in the novel is that of God’s forgiveness…  When a person makes a choice they know is wrong, however unforgivable it may seem, it is imperative to remember that God is love, and that He is ready to forgive us at any time.

The Captive Heart is an adventurous and generally wholesome Amish story.  It is packed with drama and excitement, love and value, and characters we can learn with.  The conflict is intense, (at times nail-bitingly so!) and both joy and sadness bring life to the novel.  A few faults are present, however, largely in certain elements that, while probably necessary to the story plot, could have been explained with fewer details, which would have made a number of scenes significantly less uncomfortable.  All in all, however, The Captive Heart was an interesting, adventurous sequel in which readers will learn more about the Bender family they came to know and love from the previous book in the series, Paradise Valley.

Paradise Valley review

ParadiseValley_4color+Treatments-CS3.inddWhat an interesting, unique start to a brand-new series!  Paradise Valley, an Amish Historical Fiction novel written by Dale Cramer and published in 2011 by Bethany House*, is based on actual events from Amish history.  In fact, Mr. Cramer’s great-grandparents were leading members of the real Mexican colony called Paradise Valley, which was established in the 1920s.  The writing style of this book is warm and fairly light, and allows you to watch the story unfold from the different perspectives of several characters.  Opening with conflict between an Amish community and the state law, this story pulls you into the life-changing decision made by one man attempting to protect his family.

A significant reason in explaining what makes Paradise Valley such a memorable read is the large host of remarkable and lovable characters contained within pages of the book.  Although the story is spotlighting an entire family, a strong and caring young girl named Rachel Bender is our main heroine.  Other characters almost as prominent include her loving, persuasive sister Emma, the “too-smart-for-her-own-good” sister Miriam, and their honorable, faithful ‘Dat’, Caleb.  The entire Bender family, from Dat and Mamm down to the youngest daughter, grow stronger, closer to each other, and closer to God as the story unfolds.  For you, the reader, the vivid portrayal of the characters brings each one to life as a friend who will not soon be forgotten.

In the simple Amish community of Salt Creek Township, Ohio, life is changed in an instant when the government forces the Plain people to abide by a law completely opposing their way of life, religion, and beliefs.  This inevitably forces Caleb Bender to make a decision that will affect his family and community forever.  Suddenly huge, challenging questions are formed for everyone involved…  How can Rachel leave the newly-found love of her life?  What will Emma do about her secret sin?  Will Miriam, soon to be considered an old-maid, ever have a family of her own?  To preserve their Amish faith, each member of the family is forced to endure danger and hardship as they build a new life for themselves far from everything familiar.

Paradise Valley interprets several fundamental themes into the storyline, the most obvious being the importance of family, faith, and love.  The Bender family is truly amazing in their strength as a family, proving that with God’s help, a united family can accomplish the near impossible. Interestingly left as an undecided topic, you are made to wonder which is the more honorable decision to make when the lives of those you love are threatened – is the Amish way of non-violence best in each and every scenario?  Also portrayed in this story is the importance of patience and honesty, and the necessity of discovering for yourself who you were meant to be, and what you were meant to accomplish with your life.  Together, these messages make for wholesome reading.

Although labeled as an Amish novel, this book in it’s uniqueness is not a typical Plain story.  It is a highly enjoyable story, and even readers who aren’t usually fans of Amish stories will likely be captivated by Paradise Valley.  One strong negative aspect present in this book, however, is that while honesty is looked on as so important in the family and community, it is not carried out by Emma when she keeps her immoral actions a secret from everyone but two sisters.  Also, while it seems to be a typical Amish way, Rachel seems to be extremely young when she first falls in love.  In general, however, Paradise Valley allows you to travel back in history and meet a family with amazing strength, enjoy a sweet love story, and look forward with anticipation to the next book in the series.
