I love animals, especially dogs—so much so, in fact, that I own two dogs of my own, work at an animal shelter, and am training to become a canine massage therapist! So when the opportunity came along to read a book filled with inspirational dog stories, how could I resist? “Doctor Dog: Healing Touches from Pets We Love” was written by M.R. Wells, and published by Harvest House. Categorized as a Devotional, this little book contains dozens of stories about dogs of all shapes and sizes changing the lives of the people they love, often in amazing ways. Continue reading
“I Am Found: Quitting the Game of Hide and Seek With God and Others” is the third Moody Bible Study for Women that I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Written by Laura Dingman as a 6-week study guide, this volume is a little shorter than the other books in the series, but packs plenty of insight into each page.
One way that “I Am Found” is different from the other Moody Bible Studies for Women is that it does not focus on a specific book (or partial book) of the Bible, but rather zooms in on the themes of shame and identity. Continue reading
I am so delighted with the new women’s Bible study series from Moody Publishers! The latest treasure I have found within the series was written by Erica Wiggenhorn, and is entitled “An Unexplainable Life: Recovering the Wonder and Devotion of the Early Church”. In this 10-week study, readers delve into the book of Acts, specifically chapters 1 through 12. As Erica explains about Acts, “(it) is the story of Christ’s mission becoming reality in the lives of his followers. To study it is an invitation for it to become your reality and mine.” Continue reading
Do you enjoy adult coloring books filled with adorable, whimsical, beautiful-but-not-too-detailed illustrations which you can creatively fill with whatever colors you desire? And what if this charming coloring book was filled with Scripture verses, and also had an accompanying devotional page which highlighted each individual verse, and gave you ideas and insights to ponder as you color? Well, as I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, if you answered “yes” to these questions then I have the perfect book for you! “Words of Grace” was created by Jacqui Grace and Dee Arrand, and published by Bethany House in the spring of 2017. I recently discovered a fun, unique new Bible Study series called “Word Writers: Experience the Bible…Writing Word by Word”. As with most books of this kind, devotions, reflection questions, and quotes from Scripture are included in a daily reading, but with “Word Writers” there is one more – rather unusual – step… Continue reading
“Reclaiming the Lost Art of Biblical Meditation: Find True Peace in Jesus” is an attractive, compact little book with a big title that makes a big promise. Written by Robert J. Morgan and published by Thomas Nelson in the spring of 2017, this book encourages (and guides) readers to find “the peace of meditation in a biblically sound way.” Although not large in size, the content is insightful and inspiring, and contains a vast amount of practical information to help readers Continue reading
Are you searching for a high-quality, durable, and reader-friendly Bible that is suitable for everyday use? So was I, until I found a lovely new version from Thomas Nelson, entitled “NKJV Journal the Word Large Print Bible: Reflect, Journal, or Create Art Next to Your Favorite Verses”. From the floral-fabric encased hardcover to the thick, cream-colored pages, this Bible delighted me from the start. Of course, the special feature of this edition was also a bonus – the lightly ruled lines vertically bordering one side of each page allow for plenty of room to include notes, reflections, or even art next to the verses themselves. Are you ready to take a journey towards exponential joy, deeply ingrained peace, and a relationship more rewarding than anything you could ever imagine? Do you long for a friendship with someone who listens, comforts, and loves you unconditionally for who you are, and who you were meant to be? Although many people don’t realize it, a true relationship with our Heavenly Father can become the most vital part of life if we just take the time and effort to nourish it, by communing with Him. A brand new book published by Bethany House, entitled The Pleasure of His Company, shares powerful insights about stepping into the Lord’s peaceful presence simply to enjoy fellowship with him. Author Dutch Sheets shares personal stories and biblical insights in this powerful but easy-to-read book, which is sure to be enjoyed for many reasons…
– Because this book is divided into 30 short chapters, it is perfect for use as a daily devotional. Each chapter introduces readers to a new concept, practice, or insight, and ends with a heartfelt prayer footnoted with scriptural references.
– Dutch Sheets is a talented writer, infusing his work with emotion and personal stories. You will undoubtedly laugh, possibly cry, and maybe even laugh until you cry!
– Taking an in-depth look at scripture, Mr. Sheets reveals the root and origin of various words found in sometimes-confusing passages of scripture. Many times this basic study brings to light a greater understanding of God’s Word.
– The content of this delightful book is fresh, unique, and definitely not typical of many Christian books and ideas popular today. A personal relationship with God is a foreign concept to many people, yet this is the basis of The Pleasure of His Company.
Although the excellent qualities far outweigh the negative aspects, I personally felt slightly put off by a few of the analogies presented in a couple of the chapters. Overall, however, this book was a delightful, powerful reading journey to take, and most importantly it nourished my relationship with the Lord along the way. I hope – and pray – that this book will bless you in many ways, inspire you to build a personal relationship with our Creator, and simply enjoy The Pleasure of His Company!

A fresh, unique new devotional has been released, entitled Revealing Jesus – A 365-Day Devotional by Darlene Zschech. Ms. Zschech is an Australian-resident singer, songwriter, worship leader, author, speaker, and co-pastor with her husband, and is best known for her song entitled ‘Shout to the Lord.’ Published by Bethany House in the spring of 2013, her newest book is an inspiring collection of readings arranged into a beautiful volume which is not only very visually appealing in it’s color coordination and easy-to-read size and format, but is more importantly filled to the seams with praise and love for our Heavenly Father.
Although designed to be accompanied by it’s corresponding song album of the same title, Revealing Jesus is very easily read as a stand-alone book. Each day’s selection begins with a Scripture verse and insightful illustration for daily life, and is finished with a brief yet heartfelt prayer. While simple in the delivery, the personal devotionals are sure to be compelling to many diverse circumstances, and thought-provoking enough to inspire more intense searching of Scripture, as well as the depths of the heart. In truth, each daily selection gives readers the benefit of a concise and hard-hitting Bible study. Unlike many other 365 day devotionals that merely skim the surface of difficult life issues and hardships, Revealing Jesus nudges readers into a deeper and more heartfelt level of Christian living, and promises to become a beloved, classic volume in the homes of many who are striving to reveal Jesus in their own lives.
