Believe it or not, I had never read a book by Mary Connealy until her newest title was released from Bethany House. Now I regret having missed out on this talented author’s previous work, because her newest story was such a delight! “The Accidental Guardian” is the first book in the “High Sierra Sweethearts” series, with the second novel set to be released later this fall. Filled with nail-biting adventure, beautifully detailed setting, sweet romance, subtle humor, and heart-warming themes, this is truly Christian Historical Fiction at it’s best.
For several years now I had the impression that many Mary Connealy’s novels contained mature content which crossed the line of what I consider appropriate for Christian Fiction, but I’d never actually read her work. When I was given the opportunity to read and review “The Accidental Guardian”, I decided to finally check for myself – and I’m so glad I did! The tagline is what first caught my attention: “She’s the only witness to a wagon train attack. Keeping her safe, though, means his world is about to be turned upside down.”
From the first page, the story drew me in and held me captive until I was so sorry to reach the end – but thankfully there is a closely-connected sequel on the way! As far as mature and/or inappropriate content, there is very little to be concerned about. I was on high-alert for it, but only a couple of minor instances caught my attention. There were a few scenes that were quite violent and a little frightening, but after reading the synopsis I was expecting this.
In the end, I am delighted to have read “The Accidental Guardian” by Mary Connealy. Although it was my first experience with this acclaimed author it certainly won’t be my last… You can bet that I will be at the front of the line to read “The Reluctant Warrior” when it releases in October, and “The Unexpected Champion” set to hit the shelves next April! If you enjoy well-written and memorable Christian Historical Fiction, I absolutely recommend that you add “The Accidental Guardian” to your reading list.
