This Story Will Leave You Breathless…

As you may know I do not often read science fiction or fantasy novels, but something about the new release by a bestselling father-daughter author duo really caught my attention. “The Girl Behind the Red Rope” is the first collaboration by Ted Dekker and Rachelle Dekker and was published by Revell in 2019. Let’s just say – I am SO glad I read this novel!

Although labelled simply as “Suspense” (and it certainly is suspenseful and thrilling), there are many other layers to the genre of this unique story… It has elements of fantasy and science fiction, but much of it is (or could be) very true-to-real-life. In any case, I didn’t know what to expect when I began reading, and even if I had I would have been surprised. . .

From the first chapter I was swept into the story by these masterful authors, but I have to admit that I didn’t always LIKE the story. It was strange and even uncomfortable to read, and often felt very dark and hopeless. I kept reading though, and the story continued to reveal new layers of allegory that fascinated me and also challenged me to really think and pay attention as the story continued to unfold. By the time I was about three-quarters through I could barely turn the pages fast enough, and I had to remind myself to breathe as a few plot twists left me breathless! By the time I reached the end I had tears in my eyes, amazed by the beauty of the themes as everything reached a stunning climax and denouement.

I really can’t say much more without giving away vital pieces of the story, but I will say that the war between living in fear and living in love is portrayed powerfully and memorably and even rather hauntingly. For sure, this book will linger in your mind long after you reach the end – but that’s a good thing… Why? Because these messages are meant to be absorbed and lived, not just read about. If you are looking for a new novel that will challenge your faith and compel you to ask yourself difficult questions about fear and love, I strongly encourage you to pick up a copy of “The Girl Behind the Red Rope”. It may not be a story that you love every page of, but if you are open to the messages it just might change your life.
