You know you are reading a book by a talented author when the words on the page form a story that is equal parts hilarious and tragic, messy and endearing. Kristi Ann Hunter’s second novel in the “Haven Manor” series from Bethany House Publishers is a close continuation of the first installment, and is entitled “A Return of Devotion”. This charming book draws you into the dilemmas of the characters from the first page, and had me scarcely able to turn the pages fast enough to discover how the heroine would get herself out of the terrible fix she was in!
I adore Kristi Ann Hunter’s writing style. She somehow manages to find the humor and warmth in serious situations, while simultaneously creating characters that tug at your heartstrings and have you rooting for their (sometimes unexpected and unorthodox) causes. I also appreciate that the less-than-desirable situations that many of the characters find themselves in are handled with discretion, and bad choices are shown to be regretful but, of course, ultimately forgiven by God.
If you enjoy regency romance stories that are filled with strong elements of faith, characters who seem to walk straight off the pages, and a plot that will have you reading long into the night, you will adore the “Haven Manor” series as much as I do. I highly recommend reading them in order, as Daphne’s story in “A Return of Devotion” very closely ties in with Kit’s story in “A Defense of Honor”, and you will have a much better understanding of the seemingly outlandish measures taken to protect certain secrets. . . But I won’t say any more – you’ll have to read this endearing saga for yourself!
