I have only read a couple of Sharon Jaynes’ books, but with each one I always reach the end with a sense of greater knowledge and deeper understanding of God’s Word. I believe this is the result of Sharon truly listening to God’s voice as she writes. Her newest book, “Enough: Silencing the Lies That Steal Your Confidence” is actually a revised edition of an earlier work, but is a first-time read for me. Published by Harvest House, this book helps answer the question I think all women have asked, “What can you do when you feel you’re just not good enough?”
“Enough” is divided into two sections: Part 1: The Battle for Your Thought Life; and Part 2: The Lies Women Tell Themselves. While I certainly benefited from reading both sections, the first one resonated with me the most… especially the portions about recognizing the different ways the enemy works in our lives. With warmth and wisdom, this section breaks down a four-step process for overcoming the lies we’ve been told by the enemy: 1. Realize the enemy’s true identity; 2. Recognize the lies; 3. Reject the lies; and 4. Replace the lies with Truth. The second section walks readers through this process by using each of the four steps to specifically target a few of the many lies we so often believe, such as: I’m Not Good Enough, I’m So Ugly, I Would Be Happy If…, My Life is Hopeless, and more. Finally, the book includes two bonus features at the end: Replacing the Lies with the Truth Quick Reference Guide; and a Bible Study Guide for each chapter.
Although I learned a ton from reading “Enough”, and it is definitely a title that I will refer back to time and time again, perhaps this quote sums up what was the most important benefit for me:
“(Satan) has a collection of old tapes from your past, and he pushes rewind and play, rewind and play. Oh yes, he knows which buttons to push. He also uses personal pronouns like “I” instead of “you”… The thoughts sound like you, feel like you, and before you know it, you think they are you. That’s the reason it’s so difficult to detect the lies. They sound just like us…. Satan knows exactly which lies to whisper in your mind. He has watched you over the years and is well acquainted with your insecurities, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities. Do you tend to get discouraged? He will plant seeds of discouragement in your mind. Do you tend to struggled with rejection and loneliness? He will put ideas about rejection and loneliness in your mind. It’s up to us to recognize the lies so we’ll know how to defeat them.”
And with the help of this book, God’s Word, and the Holy Spirit, that’s exactly what I intend to do – and I encourage you to as well!
