I was long overdue for my dose of a Karen Witemeyer story, and her newest novel was even better than I’d hoped! “More Than Meets the Eye” was published by Bethany House as the first of the “Patchwork Family” novels, and just like all of Karen’s books is the perfect combination of sweet and heart-pounding, witty and thought-provoking.
“More Than Meets the Eye” opened with a tear-jerking prologue that yanked me into the story, and my imagination was held captive until the very last page. In fact, I still feel connected to the characters and am waiting anxiously to discover if the next “Patchwork Family” novel will be about the character I’m so hoping for (Zach). Evangeline is a delightful, sparkling heroine with many unique characteristics, not the least being her two different colored eyes; while Logan is a good-hearted but misguided hero seeking to overcome the secrets of his past in ways even he doesn’t realize. Add a hilarious pet hog named Hezekiah, a pair of overprotective brothers, an attempted murder, a mysterious stranger, and a deadly moonshine operation and you have the makings of a classic, exciting, inspirational, western romance that will tug at your heartstrings!
“More Than Meets the Eye” is one of my favorite Karen Witemeyer novels to date (though each one seems like my favorite after I finish it…), and contained only a few minor, inappropriate details that are barely noticeable. If you enjoy Christian Historical Fiction (especially Westerns) at its best, you won’t want to miss this delightful new story. Two words of warning, though: you won’t be able to put it down, and you will mourn over the fact that a sequel is not likely be released for many months!
