An Exciting Resource for Christian Entrepreneurs – Guest Review by Hayley

A new addition to the non-fiction market has been released through Baker publishing, and is entitled “Called to Create: A Biblical Invitation to Create, Innovate, and Risk” by Jordan Raynor.  It is written especially for Christian entrepreneurs who want their work to feel more like a calling and less like a job.   Continue reading

Helping Us Become Students of God’s Word

“Deeper Waters: Immersed in the Life-Changing Truth of God’s Word” is the type of book that you will want to keep close by, on your nightstand or in your desk, because you will inevitably want to read and reference it time after time. Written by Denise J. Hughes (author of the “Word Writers” series) and published by Harvest House in 2017, this book offered so much more than I expected. Unquestionably one of the best non-fiction books I’ve read this year, “Deeper Waters” is a resource I cannot recommend highly enough. Continue reading

A Lovely New Book by Candace Cameron Bure

From “New York Times” Bestselling author, producer, inspirational speaker, and actress Candace Cameron Bure comes a beautiful new book that will undoubtedly earn a treasured position on the shelves of women of all ages. “Staying Stylish: Cultivating a Confident Look, Style & Attitude” was published by Zondervan towards the end of 2017, and is a treasure trove of ideas for “discovering your most confident, stylish self”!

“Staying Stylish” is a beautifully designed hardcover book (complete with satin ribbon page-marker) that overflows with gorgeous photos, handy tips, and Candace’s warm writing style. It is divided into three parts: Continue reading

A Story Shared with Humility and Honesty – Guest Review by Hayley

One of Revell Publishing’s newest releases to the non-fiction market is “Hurt Road” by none other than Mark Lee, guitarist for the Christian band Third Day.  In a gentle, friendly style, Mark Lee invites us to join him in the stories he has lived, offering us a glimpse into “the music, the memories, and the miles between”.  While “Hurt Road” is a book that can easily be enjoyed by anyone, I would especially recommend it to those with a love of music, as much of the book is written from the perspective of a musician. A Touch of Disney Magic (Guest Review by Hayley)

“Beyond the Castle” surprised me in many ways.  To start, I didn’t have high expectations of the book.  I thought it would be a cute, fluffy, but essentially useless book of platitudes, and “happy thoughts” that don’t really work on the bad days.  To sum up how the real content of the book compares to my expectations, three words are most fitting: I was wrong.   Continue reading

A Fascinating, Compelling Guide to Understanding Personality

Fantastic! Intriguing! Life-changing! The best non-fiction book I’ve read this year! That is basically my short description of a book by Anne Bogel called “Reading People: How Seeing the World Through the Lens of Personality Changes Everything”. Published by BakerBooks in the autumn of 2017, the sub-title of this book really says it all. Why? Because everything truly does change when you view life through the lens of personality! As the back cover asks, “Want to revolutionize the way you live, love, work, and pray? Understanding personality is the first step!” If you’ve ever wanted a better understanding of the personality frameworks that are popular today, this book should definitely go to the top of your must-read pile. A Must-Read Before Christmas!

For many people, Christmas can be a rather controversial topic. It’s supposed to be the “most wonderful time of the year”, filled with reflection on the baby in a manger and quality time with family. While this may be the case to some degree, there’s more to the story for most families. . . In reality, this season is also a time of hectic chaos, heartache that seems to build up from a difficult year, and frustration over what we wish was true but isn’t. In a new book from Baker Publishing, “Loving My Actual Christmas: An Experiment in Relishing the Season”, Alexandra Kuykendall unpacks some great insights into being present AND finding joy in our own actual, imperfect Christmases. A Deep Look into the Fortress of God’s Love

If you have read any of author Heather Holleman’s works, you will know that she is passionate about discovering and revealing the hidden depths of life-changing verbs in Scripture. “Guarded by Christ: Knowing the God Who Rescues and Keeps Us” was released by Moody Publishers and, not surprisingly, is an in-depth journey of uncovering what it truly means to allow God to guard us in every way, every day.

Heather’s words are special because she is so incredibly real and honest as she delivers them. Through the three sections of her book (Our Guarding God; In the Secret Place of the Soul; and Living Daily in the Fortress) Continue reading

A Small Book with a Huge Impact

Don’t you love Christian Spiritual Growth books that are written by an author who draws you in, shares her story, teaches you what she has learned about God, and becomes a friend in the process? For me, many books by Moody Publishers fit this description, and the latest one I’ve read is no exception. Although small in size, Heather Holleman’s “Seated with Christ: Living Freely in a Culture of Comparison” holds a huge impact in terms of living what she calls a “seated life” in Christ. Continue reading

Awesome Resource for Moviegoers!

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I first picked up my copy of of “God in the Movies: A Guide for Exploring Four Decades of Film”, edited by Catherine M. Barsotti and Robert K. Johnston. Published by BrazosPress in 2017, the purpose of the book is to “encourage movie lovers and small groups to reflect critically and theologically on some of the best movies of recent years.”

“God in the Movies” is a thick volume with in-depth discussions for 40 movies, all released between 1981 and 2014. This extensive list includes classics such as: “Chariots of Fire”, “Groundhog Day”, “Up”, “Life of Pi”, and of course many more. Continue reading
