At last, the third installment to the “Men of Valor” series has been released! Readers of the first two books in this family saga will undoubtedly flock to Irene Hannon’s newest release, “Tangled Webs”. And with the promise of suspense and intrigue, who wouldn’t?
I am very impressed with the storyline of “Tangled Webs”. The many layers to the plot, and how it all comes together in such a complicated yet understandable way, was nothing short of brilliant, and I credit the author for achieving this task to such a high degree. Dee Henderson is the popular and award-winning author of many bestselling series, but honestly, after reading her latest novel, I don’t see what all the hype for her writing is about. “Traces of Guilt: An Evie Blackwell Cold Case”, was published by Bethany House late in 2016. It is presumably the first of a new series, but is somehow connected to many of Henderson’s previous books as well. In any case, I was excited to dive into what I hoped would be a fascinating mystery filled with twists and turns as a years-old mystery is finally solved. That’s what a cold case mystery novel is, right? Unfortunately, not so much…
“A Financial Thriller That Will Keep Readers on the Edge of Their Seats”. This is the tagline for a new book called “The Domino Effect” written by Davis Bunn and published by Bethany House in the fall of 2016. I’ve read and enjoyed the intricate plots of Mr. Bunn’s work before, so I decided to take a closer look at this one too. Although the back-cover synopsis sounded extremely interesting and fast-paced, I still had one question…what exactly is a financial thriller? 
Lyrical. Honest. Inquiring. Beautiful. I could continue, but these four words give you at least a partial picture of the depth and power held in the pages of a new book by Charles Martin, entitled “Long Way Gone”. Published by Thomas Nelson in 2016, this is the first novel by Charles Martin that I have ever read. It won’t be my last! Rarely do Christian novels probe as deeply into the human heart and touch readers in as many profound ways as “Long Way Gone” does. Quite simply, once you read it you won’t forget it. It may even change you as a person. 
Do you enjoy suspense novels that suck you in with the first chapter and keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end, guessing at how all the twists and turns will unravel when the truth is finally revealed? “The Raven” by Mike Nappa is just such a book. Published by Revell in 2016, “The Raven” is actually the second book in the “Coffey and Hill” series. While I have not read the previous book (entitled “Annabel Lee”) it did not detract from my enjoyment of this separate-but-connected storyline. Also, while I am not an Edgar Allan Poe aficionado, fans of the famous poet will be delighted by the many intriguing parallels found in the story. 
Although Christian Romantic Suspense is not my go-to genre of choice, I am happy to be swept away by one filled with mystery, intrigue, and excitement once in a while. Last year I enjoyed “Always Watching”, the first book in Lynette Eason’s “Elite Guardians” series published by Revell, and recently had the chance to read the second installment entitled “Without Warning”. Just who are the Elite Guardians, you ask? As the tagline for the series explains: “Intensity. Skill. Tenacity. The Bodyguards of Elite Guardians Agency Have It All.” 
At long last, Revell has released the second installment in “The Nikki Boyd Files” by Lisa Harris, entitled “Missing”. Picking up shortly after “Vendetta” came to a close, “Missing” has Nikki and her team on the trail of a missing couple who seemed to escape the scene of a murder in their own home. It doesn’t take long for the husband’s body to be found… But what about the wife? With fast-paced action and nail-biting exploits at every turn, Nikki and her team race against the clock even as the trail of the missing woman leads them into a deadly ring of counterfeit drugs and a murderer who will stop at nothing to keep his secrets hidden. As all skilled detectives know, “The first 48 hours are the most critical…” 
If you feel like stepping into a Contemporary Romance story that feels like it belongs on the Hallmark channel, you will not want to miss the newest novel by Irene Hannon entitled “Sea Rose Lane”. Published by Revell in the summer of 2016, this story is the sequel to “Hope Harbor” which released last year, and contains numerous recurring characters, plus several new ones. 
“Fading Starlight” is the first book I’ve read by Kathryn Cushman, but it most definitely won’t be the last! Published by Bethany House in 2016, “Fading Starlight” is a contemporary story that weaves the past and present into one captivating narrative. The gift Ms. Cushman has for bringing her characters to life causes readers to feel as though they are watching a movie, not reading a novel, but this story’s merits don’t end there. Let’s take a look at three of the foundational elements upon which this story is built…
“Murder Comes by Mail” is the anticipated second book in the “Hidden Springs Mystery” series, written by A.H Gabhart and published by Revell. As a continuation this book focuses on the same protagonist, supporting cast members and setting, but a vastly different plot and mystery. Although considered a “cozy mystery”, the darker elements of this book definitely did not feel very “cozy” to me. Yes, there were a few light and humorous moments, but they never lasted long.
