As the Easter season approaches each year, I enjoy being on the lookout for new stories that highlight the theme of Jesus’ last days on earth. This year I found a story that is told from perhaps the most unique perspective I’ve come across so far – through the eyes of a small, innocent dog! “The Dog Who Was There: A Novel” was written by Ron Marasco and published by Thomas Nelson early in 2017. In this sweet and oh-so-endearing story, a little dog named Barley Continue reading

Live Life “Without Rival”

Do you want to live a life without rival? Although I had never identified it in quite those terms before, a new book from Revell helped me realize that my answer was, indeed, yes! “Without Rival: Embrace Your Identity and Purpose in an Age of Confusion and Comparison” is the newest book written by bestselling author Lisa Bevere. With love, humor, and an upbeat writing style, “Without Rival” drew me in from the first page and helped me look at many aspects of Christian life with refreshing and often exciting insight. The Title Says it All
“The Jesus Bible: Sixty-six Books. One Story. All About One Name.” The title of this new NIV Bible grabbed my attention right away, and when I saw the descriptions of the study features included inside I knew it would be a special volume. Featured in this Bible are essays by Louie Giglio, Max Lucado, John Piper, Ravi Zacharias, and Randy Alcorn on the overarching narrative of Scripture, plus the sidebars contain numerous articles discussing the revelation of Jesus through each book of the Bible. Introductions to each of the sixty-six books are designed to highlight the ever-present story of Jesus in every page of Scripture, and to help us understand the purpose of each individual author in pointing us towards Him. NKJV Journal the Word Bible – A Lovely Edition
Are you searching for a high-quality, durable, and reader-friendly Bible that is suitable for everyday use? So was I, until I found a lovely new version from Thomas Nelson, entitled “NKJV Journal the Word Large Print Bible: Reflect, Journal, or Create Art Next to Your Favorite Verses”. From the floral-fabric encased hardcover to the thick, cream-colored pages, this Bible delighted me from the start. Of course, the special feature of this edition was also a bonus – the lightly ruled lines vertically bordering one side of each page allow for plenty of room to include notes, reflections, or even art next to the verses themselves. Encouraging and Hope-Infused
I adore Susie Larson’s writing style. It is warm and personal, sweet and conversational. So, when I discovered her newest book had been released, I couldn’t wait to read it… “Your Powerful Prayers: Reaching the Heart of God with a Bold and Humble Faith” was published by Bethany House in the fall of 2016, and as the title reveals, is focused entirely on the purpose and value of prayer in the life of a Christian. Simply Charming and a Beautiful Gift!
After taking just one look at the Beautiful Word Coloring Bible, it had already surpassed my expectations. If I were going to describe it in just a couple of words, I think that most accurate would be “absolutely charming”.
The illustrations for coloring are lovely – not too intricate, but not too simple, and there are plenty of lightly lined, or blank spaces in the margins that can be used for either journaling, or for drawing your own personal creations. Since it is a Bible, the pages are rather thin, so I would recommend coloring with pencil crayons rather than markers, but the pages are still thicker than a regular Bible. A pretty, light blue ribbon marker, and a lovely presentation page make this Bible ideal to be given as a gift, or simply for your own enjoyment. I also appreciate that it is in the NIV translation.
All in all, I highly recommend the Beautiful Word Bible, whether it is for yourself, or to give as a gift. It is charming to say the least, and will undoubtedly be a wonderful addition to your devotional time, artistic endeavors, or anything else you choose!
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
A Treasure Trove of Prayers
The title of a non-fiction book does not always convey the full purpose and content of the book itself. In the case of a new book written by Scotty Smith and published by Baker Books, however, the title sums up the content perfectly… What is this book? It is called, “Every Season Prayers: Gospel-Centered Prayers for the Whole of Life”. Continue reading
Understand Scripture in a Whole New Way! (Guest Review by H.B.E.)
I was thrilled to be able to review the “Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible”. After having my interest piqued several months ago to learn more of the historical and cultural context surrounding Biblical events, I was eager to learn more, and the “Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible” provided me with a way to do just that. For, as the subtitle says, it truly does bring the ancient world of scripture to life. Continue reading
A Sweet Retelling from Scripture
As someone who has always enjoyed the biblical book of Ruth, I was delighted when I discovered a fictional retelling of the story by renowned author Tessa Afshar. Published by Moody’s River North Fiction in 2014, the book is aptly entitled “In the Field of Grace”. If you enjoy biblical fiction of any kind, this book will be a welcome addition to your library for many reasons, including:
- The story is masterfully told, flowing easily and smoothly.
- The characters, both primary and secondary, are convincing and compelling, (which is not always the case with biblical fiction).
- Including an accurate portrayal of the narrative from Scripture, the story also contains numerous little details that bring it to life in a believable and relatable way. Interestingly, the additional information takes care not to detract from the facts.
- Although several scenes and conversations border on inappropriate, I admire the author’s careful avoidance of stepping over the sometimes-obscure boundaries of morality in Christian Historical Fiction.
- Although the language of the characters occasionally feels a bit too “modern” for the time period, the author explains this in her notes when she says, “I want to create a world that feels like the biblical era and yet connects emotionally to my reader. You might say my language resembles more of a New Living Translation vibe than the literal accuracy of a translation such as the English Standard Version.”
Overall, this story is a sweet and enjoyable retelling of a timeless tale from Scripture. Although it was the first book I’ve read by Tessa Afshar, it certainly won’t be the last! If you enjoy the story of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz, and don’t mind a bit of fiction combined with facts to create a compelling novel, don’t miss “In the Fields of Grace”.
I received this book courtesy of Moody Publishers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
