Every book I’ve read by Hannah Anderson is like a retreat for the soul, a space where I can be quiet, calm, and contemplative. “Turning of Days: Lessons from Nature, Season, and Spirit” was released by Moody Publishers and is a bit different from her usual books, mainly because, as Hannah herself explains, it is “a collection of devotional essays (rather than in my typical book-length form) because I want to invite you to slow down and reflect on nature’s testimony.” It is organized by the four seasons, and includes beautifully simple sketches and illustrations completed by Hannah’s husband Nathan.Continue reading
If you only read a single non-fiction book this year (aside from the Bible), I suggest that it be Jennie Allen’s new release from Thomas Nelson Publishers. Yes, it was THAT good. “Made For This: 40 Days to Living Your Purpose” is the first book I’ve read by this incredible author, but now I want to get my hands on everything she’s written! “Made For This” is not just a regular book, rather it is “a 40-day interactive journey, a step-by-step process to guide you in answering life’s ultimate question.” In a workbook-style format with daily reading followed by exercises, journaling questions, Scripture reading, and more, this book is unique and powerful. If you let it, it can also be life-changing. Continue reading
Many of the non-fiction books that I gravitate toward have to do with women of the Bible. I was excited to see that this new release from Revell “When Life Doesn’t Match Your Dreams: Hope for Today from 12 Women of the Bible” revolved around exactly that topic, and from Jill Eileen Smith, an incredibly talented Biblical fiction author! I believe this book, even now that I am finished it, will help me to read the Bible with a much deeper ability to relate to the people and stories within it’s pages. They really were not as different from you and me as it might feel from a quick reading. Continue reading
It’s a topic that is rarely discussed, but that affects all of us at some time or another. I’m talking about the feeling of envy, the sensation of a stinging heart when someone receives the very thing we desire. “Seeing Green: Don’t Let Envy Color Your Joy” is a challenging new book written by Tilly Dillehay and published by Harvest House. If you have ever struggled with the ugly effects of envy in your life, this enlightening and Scripture-founded book will undoubtedly provide both a balm and a wake-up call for your heart. “Battle Ready: Train Your Mind to Conquer Challenges, Defeat Doubt, and Live Victoriously”. Wow! With a title like that, you certainly expect a book that is filled with actionable and practical wisdom, and Bible-based strategies to help us walk fully and courageously in the plans (and on the path) that God has for us. Does this book deliver on this expectation? Absolutely!
Have you ever tried reading a book that had a strong message and worthwhile intentions, but you just couldn’t get into it? That was the case for me with Dr. Larry Crabb’s new release, entitled “A Different Kind of Happiness: Discovering the Joy That Comes from Sacrificial Love”. Without question there are many jewels of wisdom found within the pages of this book, but at times the language feels so deep and lengthy that those gems are difficult to uncover. Perhaps a slow and thoughtful reading is what is needed, with plenty of time between chapters to ponder and consider the author’s message… Continue reading
Heaven is the abode of God. Although every Christian has likely considered this subject at one time or another, many of us, perhaps even the majority of us, may not have given it the in-depth and Biblically-based study it deserves. With the help of a new title published by BakerBooks and written by Chip Ingram with Lance Witt, however, we can dive into the fascinating, life-changing study of our future home with ease and excitement.
