Dr. Leaf’s New Book Helps Us Take Charge Of Our Mind – And Change Our Lives!

54080933For years now, whenever a new book is released by neuroscientist Dr. Caroline Leaf, I am quick to add a copy to my TBR list. Her work has impacted me tremendously, and I have recommended her insights to many people I know. While her newest publication from Baker Books has a bit of a contentious title (it is not something I can easily give as a gift without offending the recipient!) it is powerful and potentially life-changing nonetheless. “Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess: 5 Simple, Scientifically Proven Steps to Reduce Anxiety, Stress, and Toxic Thinking” is a powerhouse of a book. Packed with up-to-date brain research from Dr. Leaf’s own clinical studies and the research of other scientists, this book combines science with practical application. Continue reading

Practical New Mental-Health Strategies From Dr. Leaf!

Dr. Caroline Leaf definitely has a gift for writing timely books that prove to be exactly what the world currently needs. Just take a look at the title of her recent release from BakerBooks: “101 Ways to Be Less Stressed: Simple Self-Care Strategies to Boost Your Mind, Mood, and Mental Health”. Continue reading

A Compassionate New Story from Susie Finkbeiner

Ever since finishing Susie Finkbeiner’s first novel, “All Manner of Things”, I’ve been waiting expectantly for a second story from this amazing debut author. Well, the time has finally come, and “Stories That Bind Us” released from Revell in the late spring of 2020! Just as before, Susie’s new story quickly worked its way into my heart and imagination, until it felt like I, too, was living in the “Godlilocks-sized town” of 1960s LaFontaine, Michigan. (“Not so big that someone could be completely invisible. Not so small that everyone knew the business of everybody else. It was just right.”) Continue reading

An Unforgettable Story of Grace

I had no idea what I was missing out on by not reading Elizabeth Musser’s novels, but certainly I won’t be skipping them anymore! “When I Close My Eyes” absolutely blew me away. The sheer power and depth of her words, her understanding, her ability to engage and challenge her readers was incredible, and I don’t think I will ever look at the themes of mental illness and grace in quite the same way again. Honestly, I am a different and, I think, a better person after finishing this book than I was when I began it. Continue reading

Another Powerful Book from Dr. Michelle Bengtson

Have you ever struggled with worry, anxiety, and fear? Yep, that could pretty much describe all of us at some point in our lives, right? As Christians, however, we have a few not-so-secret weapons to cope with and combat the battle against anxiety. Of course, this comes through claiming our identity in Christ, but sometimes that is easier said than done. Dr. Michelle Bengtson’s new book from Revell is a powerful volume that reminds us how each day we have the choice of “Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises”. A Thrilling Story Infused With Hope

Jaime Jo Wright is a Christy Award-winning author who is quickly becoming more recognized for her incredible storytelling skills. In each of her novels, she brings dark and thrilling stories to life while simultaneously infusing them with truth and light. Usually set in two different time periods and with two casts of characters, the plot of past and present is intricately intertwined (but not fully revealed until the nail-biting conclusion). The newest Bethany House release from Jaime Jo Wright is “The Curse of Misty Wayfair”; perhaps the most haunting, and yet also the most inspiring, of her novels so far. Continue reading

A Health and Wellness Guide with a Biblical Foundation

Sometimes a book’s title accurately and succinctly describes exactly what you can expect to find within the pages. That is the case with a new book by Nelson Searcy and Jennifer Dykes Henson – “The New You: A Guide to Better Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Wellness”. Published by BakerBooks early in the new year of 2019, this book is a practical yet exciting, user-friendly resource to help us form new habits and, consequently, improve our health. Contains Disappointing Belief Systems

the-rewired-brain-imageSome books are just plain difficult to review… “The Rewired Brain: Free Yourself of Negative Behaviors and Release Your Best Self” by Dr. Ski Chilton, with Dr. Margaret Rukstalis and A.J. Gregory, is just such a book. Published by BakerBooks in the fall of 2016, this title immediately caught my attention because I have learned a great deal from similar works (most by Dr. Caroline Leaf, who I highly recommend) about improving our thought lives. Since “The Rewired Brain” was published by a Christian company, I assumed that the content would be based upon Scriptures and would perhaps give new insight into “renewing our mind” from the viewpoints of both science and the Bible. While this is somewhat the case, another element that I hadn’t anticipated also came into play… Continue reading
