This Sequel Doesn’t Meet Expectations

honor-redeemed-imageAfter reading book #1 in the “Keys of Promise” series by Christine Johnson, I had very high expectations for book #2, “Honor Redeemed”. Were those expectations met? Well, not exactly…

“Honor Redeemed” was published by Revell in the later summer of 2016, and is the sequel to “Love’s Rescue” published the year before. Although the hero and heroine of this second story are newly introduced characters, several recurring characters also play important secondary roles. This gives readers a chance to be reacquainted with “old friends”. Continue reading

Valuable Insight, but Difficult to Wade Through

crabb_diffkindofhappinessHave you ever tried reading a book that had a strong message and worthwhile intentions, but you just couldn’t get into it? That was the case for me with Dr. Larry Crabb’s new release, entitled “A Different Kind of Happiness: Discovering the Joy That Comes from Sacrificial Love”. Without question there are many jewels of wisdom found within the pages of this book, but at times the language feels so deep and lengthy that those gems are difficult to uncover. Perhaps a slow and thoughtful reading is what is needed, with plenty of time between chapters to ponder and consider the author’s message… Continue reading

The Heartwarming Final Installment

Where Hope Prevails imageAfter reading the “Return to the Canadian West” series conclusion, I feel as though I have reached the end of an era. “Where Hope Prevails” was written by Janette Where Courage CallsOke and Laurel Oke Logan and published by Bethany House in 2016. Interestingly, this story plays three important but very different roles… First, it is (presumably) the final book in its series. Second, it is a spinoff story to the original “Canadian West” series published several decades ago. And third, it is a companion story to Hallmark Channel’s “When Calls the Heart” television series. If you are unfamiliar with any of these connected stories, rest assured that after reading “Where Hope Prevails” you will undoubtedly find yourself not only picking Where Trust Lies imageup the rest of the series, but also speed-reading the original saga and devouring the entire 3-season-and-counting television series, too! Understand Scripture in a Whole New Way! (Guest Review by H.B.E.)

cultural-study-bibleI was thrilled to be able to review the “Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible”. After having my interest piqued several months ago to learn more of the historical and cultural context surrounding Biblical events, I was eager to learn more, and the “Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible” provided me with a way to do just that. For, as the subtitle says, it truly does bring the ancient world of scripture to life. Continue reading

Nikki Boyd’s Story Continues…

missing-by-lisa-harrisAt long last, Revell has released the second installment in “The Nikki Boyd Files” by Lisa Harris, entitled “Missing”. Picking up shortly after “Vendetta” came to a close, “Missing” has Nikki and her team on the trail of a missing couple who seemed to escape the scene of a murder in their own home. It doesn’t take long for the husband’s body to be found… But what about the wife? With fast-paced action and nail-biting exploits at every turn, Nikki and her team race against the clock even as the trail of the missing woman leads them into a deadly ring of counterfeit drugs and a murderer who will stop at nothing to keep his secrets hidden. As all skilled detectives know, “The first 48 hours are the most critical…” Continue reading

A Sweet Retelling from Scripture

In-the-fields-of-grace1As someone who has always enjoyed the biblical book of Ruth, I was delighted when I discovered a fictional retelling of the story by renowned author Tessa Afshar. Published by Moody’s River North Fiction in 2014, the book is aptly entitled “In the Field of Grace”. If you enjoy biblical fiction of any kind, this book will be a welcome addition to your library for many reasons, including:

  • The story is masterfully told, flowing easily and smoothly.
  • The characters, both primary and secondary, are convincing and compelling, (which is not always the case with biblical fiction).
  • Including an accurate portrayal of the narrative from Scripture, the story also contains numerous little details that bring it to life in a believable and relatable way. Interestingly, the additional information takes care not to detract from the facts.
  • Although several scenes and conversations border on inappropriate, I admire the author’s careful avoidance of stepping over the sometimes-obscure boundaries of morality in Christian Historical Fiction.
  • Although the language of the characters occasionally feels a bit too “modern” for the time period, the author explains this in her notes when she says, “I want to create a world that feels like the biblical era and yet connects emotionally to my reader. You might say my language resembles more of a New Living Translation vibe than the literal accuracy of a translation such as the English Standard Version.”

Overall, this story is a sweet and enjoyable retelling of a timeless tale from Scripture. Although it was the first book I’ve read by Tessa Afshar, it certainly won’t be the last! If you enjoy the story of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz, and don’t mind a bit of fiction combined with facts to create a compelling novel, don’t miss “In the Fields of Grace”.

I received this book courtesy of Moody Publishers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

A Fascinating Sequel

13327472_792729517493676_1234031124058448960_nAn Elegant Facade imageIt isn’t very often that the second story in a series outshines the first, but that is exactly what has happened with the “Hawthorne House” series by Kristi Ann Hunter! “An Elegant Facade” is the new 2016 sequel to “A Noble Masquerade”, both published by Bethany House. According to Ms. Hunter’s website, the series will carry on for at least two more books, meaning that each of the four Hawthorne siblings will have their own story. Who is “An Elegant Facade” about, you ask? Well, it reveals the secrets of Georgina Hawthorne, and what a story it turns out to be! Continue reading

An Interesting Story, But…

The Loyal Heart imageI just finished reading a book by the well-established but new-to-me author, Shelley Shepard Gray, and honestly, I’m not sure what to think of it… As the first book in the new “Lone Star Hero’s Love Story” collection, “The Loyal Heart” was published by Zondervan in the summer of 2016. Although the storyline was unique and interesting, several other elements just didn’t quite measure up to my standards of well-written Historical Fiction. Let me explain… Continue reading
