Whenever you pick up a book by “Switch on Your Brain” author Dr. Caroline Leaf, be prepared to have your life changed in some way! This is definitely the case with her newest release from Baker Books, “The Perfect You: A Blueprint for Identity”. This book is for you if, as Dr. Leaf questions in the prologue, you’ve ever asked yourself:
“Who am I? Does anyone out there understand me . . . do I have purpose and meaning, a unique part in a divine plan? Does anyone understand who I am, or who I am meant to be? Do I even understand me? Can I accept the way God has allowed me to be? Do I really accept the blueprint for identity that God has given me?”
The book of Psalms is undoubtedly one of the most beloved books of the Bible. It certainly is for me. Still, I never truly realized the deeper meanings found throughout the Psalms. The many facets of the writing style, the structure, the imagery and many other aspects all work together to create this much deeper meaning than I would have understood at first glance. “Discovering Hope in the Psalms” by Pam Farrel, Jean E. Jones, and Karla Dornacher, is an invaluable resource to help you discover that deeper meaning.
I may have mentioned this before already, but I absolutely ADORE Moody Bible Studies for Women! Whenever a new title in this amazing series is released, I am anxious to give it a try—and I’ve never been disappointed. The newest study I’ve been enjoying is entitled “Included in Christ: Living a New Story from Ephesians” by Heather Holleman. This 8-week Bible study takes students of the Word on a journey verse-by-verse through the book of Ephesians, and unpacks what it really means to answer the questions: “Who are we? Where do we belong? How do we live included in Christ?”.
While prayer is something we are all familiar with, I believe if we are honest with ourselves it is also something we often struggle with. A new book from Moody Publishers addresses this topic directly with a book by Bill Thrasher, entitled “A Journey to Victorious Praying: Finding Discipline and Delight in Your Prayer Life”. This book is for you “If you’ve ever felt too busy, confused, or unmotivated to pray”.
Clayton King has done it again – he has written a book so powerful it is life-changing. Clayton King has a gift, without question, of delivering God’s message to us, the folks who need and want to hear it. My favorite chapter of Clayton’s new book “Overcome: Replacing the Lies That Hold Us Down with the Truths That Set Us Free” was Chapter 4 – Understand the Purpose of Suffering. I’m coming through a season of suffering, and I am thankful to Clayton for helping me understand more. This chapter came from God, through Clayton, to me. Thank you.
“Praying With Eyes Wide Open: A Life-Changing Way to Talk with God”. With a title like this you can’t help but be intrigued, don’t you think? Written by Sherry Harney with Kevin G. Harney, and published by Baker Books in 2017, this book definitely lives up to the promise on the title. . . The concepts presented were life-changing for me, and I’m guessing they will be for you too.
“Infuse Your World—and Your Heart—with God’s Life-Giving Power”. With these words, Sue Detweiler invites us on a journey of drawing closer to the heart of God through prayer. “Women Who Move Mountains: Praying with Confidence, Boldness, and Grace” was published in 2017 by Bethany House, and is written in an interactive style with integrated study questions, journaling prompts, and more.
As we all know, July 1st, 2017 is the 150th birthday of our beautiful, powerful, incredible nation called Canada. Dominion Day, or Canada Day, is always a chance to celebrate our homeland, but this year is special, a true milestone. Compared to many other nations, Canada is still young—and yet Canadians live in a country that is blessed with freedom, abundance, opportunity, and beauty. As a way of celebrating Canada 150, Bible League Canada has published a beautiful keepsake book entitled “One Dominion: Celebrating Canada, Prepared for a Purpose”. Written by Bob Beasley and Paul Richardson, and designed by Graf-Martin Communications, “One Dominion” is a compilation celebrating not only Canada as a whole nation, but also the individual men and women who were courageous and wise in the Christian faith, and as a result changed the course of Canadian history forever.
I love animals, especially dogs—so much so, in fact, that I own two dogs of my own, work at an animal shelter, and am training to become a canine massage therapist! So when the opportunity came along to read a book filled with inspirational dog stories, how could I resist? “Doctor Dog: Healing Touches from Pets We Love” was written by M.R. Wells, and published by Harvest House. Categorized as a Devotional, this little book contains dozens of stories about dogs of all shapes and sizes changing the lives of the people they love, often in amazing ways.
