You know you’ve discovered an author to watch when her debut novel is captivating, haunting, and truly holds you in frightened suspense from the first page to the last. “The House on Foster Hill”, written by Jaime Jo Wright and published by Bethany House, is just such a debut novel. Written with a spellbinding, dual-time storyline structure and filled with secrets and surprises that will keep you guessing, this story will live on in your imagination long after you’ve reached the final pages. Helping Us Become Students of God’s Word
“Deeper Waters: Immersed in the Life-Changing Truth of God’s Word” is the type of book that you will want to keep close by, on your nightstand or in your desk, because you will inevitably want to read and reference it time after time. Written by Denise J. Hughes (author of the “Word Writers” series) and published by Harvest House in 2017, this book offered so much more than I expected. Unquestionably one of the best non-fiction books I’ve read this year, “Deeper Waters” is a resource I cannot recommend highly enough. Continue reading
Another Unforgettable and Can’t-Put-It-Down Novel from Elizabeth Camden
Whenever I reach the end of an Elizabeth Camden novel, I inevitably give a long sigh for two reasons: one, I’ve had the enjoyment of reading another compelling historical novel by a master writer; and two, a story that I wish could have lasted much longer is now finished. . . Ms. Camden’s newest novel, “A Dangerous Legacy”, was published by Bethany House and is historical fiction at its best, complete with mystery, romance, intrigue, and unique viewpoints of life in New York City in 1903. Continue reading
A Fascinating Story-Within-a-Story from a Debut Author!
“Lady Jayne Disappears” by Joanna Davidson Politano is definitely one of the most unique stories I’ve read in 2017. Published by Revell in November, this fascinating novel also happens to be captivating and compelling, while imparting powerful messages of identity, love, and belonging. All this amounts to quite an accomplishment for a debut novel, wouldn’t you agree? Continue reading
A Sweet and Memorable Christmas Novella
To be honest, I didn’t feel like starting a Christmas book quite yet – it seemed too early. But after reading only the first few chapters of a story that will definitely become an annual tradition, I was enchanted. Tamera Alexander’s newest release from Thomas Nelson, “Christmas at Carnton”, is a novella, but a fairly long one. It is also the introductory story to a new three-novel series about the Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee. Continue reading
A Touch of Disney Magic (Guest Review by Hayley)
“Beyond the Castle” surprised me in many ways. To start, I didn’t have high expectations of the book. I thought it would be a cute, fluffy, but essentially useless book of platitudes, and “happy thoughts” that don’t really work on the bad days. To sum up how the real content of the book compares to my expectations, three words are most fitting: I was wrong. Continue reading
A Fascinating, Compelling Guide to Understanding Personality
Fantastic! Intriguing! Life-changing! The best non-fiction book I’ve read this year! That is basically my short description of a book by Anne Bogel called “Reading People: How Seeing the World Through the Lens of Personality Changes Everything”. Published by BakerBooks in the autumn of 2017, the sub-title of this book really says it all. Why? Because everything truly does change when you view life through the lens of personality! As the back cover asks, “Want to revolutionize the way you live, love, work, and pray? Understanding personality is the first step!” If you’ve ever wanted a better understanding of the personality frameworks that are popular today, this book should definitely go to the top of your must-read pile. Be Swept Away to a World of Ballrooms and Dancing
The moment we’ve all been waiting for (or at least all the fans of Kristi Ann Hunter’s Regency-era “Hawthorne House” series have been waiting for) finally arrived in the autumn of 2017! From Bethany House comes “An Inconvenient Beauty”, the story of the last, unmarried Hawthorne sibling: Griffith, Duke of Riverton. Because Griffith was a character we all came to adore in the previous books, I’m certain I wasn’t the only reader waiting with baited breath to finally encounter the lady who would win his heart. Continue reading
A Must-Read Before Christmas!
For many people, Christmas can be a rather controversial topic. It’s supposed to be the “most wonderful time of the year”, filled with reflection on the baby in a manger and quality time with family. While this may be the case to some degree, there’s more to the story for most families. . . In reality, this season is also a time of hectic chaos, heartache that seems to build up from a difficult year, and frustration over what we wish was true but isn’t. In a new book from Baker Publishing, “Loving My Actual Christmas: An Experiment in Relishing the Season”, Alexandra Kuykendall unpacks some great insights into being present AND finding joy in our own actual, imperfect Christmases. Continue reading
A Balm for the Heart
“These Healing Hills” by Ann H. Gabhart is a beautiful new story from Revell Publishers that is surprising in both its simplicity and in its ability to speak to the hearts of readers. Set in the Appalachian Mountains (don’t you love novels set here?) at the end of WWII, this story brings to life a special place and time in history that is, perhaps, unlike any other. Continue reading
