“Shepherding Women in Pain: Real Women, Real Issues, And What You Need to Know to Truly Help” by Bev Hislop is a valuable book for those wanting to understand and offer love and support to women and the many issues they are dealing with, often silently. This book provides an abundance of knowledge for deep questions, such as: how can I stop the pain? The chapters about the issue itself offer true stories, input from professionals, practical suggestions, things to say and do, things to avoid, resources, related scriptures, etc. I included the contents of the book as this speaks volumes for itself (it is organized into 3 sections). “What Momma Left Behind” by Cindy K. Sproles was a unique book in so many ways. Published by Revell in the summer of 2020, this book is set in the Appalachian Mountains in 1877, when influenza and typhoid outbreaks were running rampant in the region and left few families untouched by tragedy. Because of this setting, Cindy’s novel is definitely not a light and carefree story – but one that is inspiring and rich in historical details. Continue reading

It feels like a long time since I’ve read anything by beloved author Janette Oke and her daughter Laurel Oke Logan, so I was delighted to hear that they are once again releasing a new series of books from Bethany House! This time it is the “When Hope Calls” series based on the Hallmark TV show of the same name – and it is distantly connected to the “Return to the Canadian West” / “When Calls the Heart” series as well. Although this beautiful volume – written by Shirley Raye Redmond and illustrated by Katya Longhi – is marketed as a children’s title by Harvest House Publishers, I really enjoyed reading it too!
